Basic Powerboat Cruising

Three days on the Salish Sea building on-water skills for cruising safely and confidently through the Salish Sea.

Earn the US Powerboating Basic Powerboat Cruising Certificate.

Earn your Washington State Boater Card.

Course Content:

  • Cruising powerboat systems, including engine and electrical systems checks
  • Determine weather, tide and current conditions for your cruise, and how to safely plan for them
  • Pre-cruise preparations, including inventory and operation of US Coast Guard required safety equipment
  • Close quarters maneuvering and docking
  • Introductory chart work, including planning and plotting a route for a day cruise
  • Operation of a VHF radio
  • Boating knots
  • Maneuvering at low and high speeds in open water
  • Steering a compass course
  • Learn and apply the Navigation Rules
  • Anchoring procedures
  • Crew overboard rescue procedure
  • Securing the boat
  • Options to learn on single or twin engine powerboat

Tuition & Fees:

  1. $1,500 for up to four people on your boat or a charter boat.  Includes class materials & certifications for all on board.
  2. Charter boat cost, if needed, is extra.  Call to arrange.
  3. Fuel cost is shared among students.
  4. Travel stipend applies for classes more than 20 miles from Anacortes, unless the instructor can sleep on the boat.

Inshore Powerboat Cruising

Take your cruising skills to the next horizon and prepare for multi-day cruises through the Salish Sea and beyond.

Earn the US Powerboating Inshore Powerboat Cruising Certificate AND the US Powerboating Night Operations Endorsement.

Course Content:

  • Cruising larger powerboats for longer distances within sight of land
  • Deepen systems understanding, operation and trouble shooting for larger powerboat systems and longer voyages.
  • Planning and provisioning or multi-day cruises, including fuel consumption and tank capacities.
  • Preparing and delivering a float plan
  • Pre-cruise preparations, including safety systems and US Coast Guard requirements
  • Application of navigation skills for planning, plotting, and piloting your route.
  • Use of GPS chart plotter for constructing and following routes.
  • Hazard identification and mitigation
  • Crew coordination and communication for boat operations, docking and anchoring.
  • Approaching and docking in an unfamiliar marina
  • Anchoring overnight, including multiple-anchor strategies.
  • Emergency preparedness and incident management procedures
  • Crew overboard recovery techniques for day and night.
  • Identifying and mitigating for  night operations hazards
  • Use of navigation running lights and other night operations equipment
  • Night radar navigation, if available on the boat
  • Identify other vessels at night
  • Identify aids to navigation at night
  • Safely leave and enter a harbor at night
  • Options to learn on a single or twin engine boat

Scheduling:  Four day class with one night in an unfamiliar marina and and one night at anchor, plus night operations.  Contact us for scheduling.  The earlier you schedule, the more options you have.

Powerboating Cruise-&-Learn

For those who want a complete and immersive maritime learning experience, this class combines the US Powerboating Basic and Inshore Powerboating Certifications, plus the Night Operations Endorsement, plus the Washington State Boater Safety Card in a 6-day, real-world, real-time Salish Sea cruise.

Course Content:

All of the powerboat cruising standards listed above for the Basic and Inshore Powerboating classes, plus the Night Operations are included in this class.  The added bonus is that you get to learn from the many contextual situations that naturally occur in and island-to-island cruise, with multiple anchoring and docking scenarios for deepening your training and skills.

  1. $2,850 for 6 days of instruction and up to four people on your boat or a charter boat.  Includes class materials & certifications for all on board.
  2. Charter boat cost is extra.  Call to arrange.
  3. Fuel and guest moorage costs are shared among students.
  4. Extra days are optional (including option for instructor/captain drop-off on a longer cruise).

Custom Instruction on Your Powerboat

Learn the skills you need to safely operate, maneuver and cruise your personal powerboat – large or small.

Prerequisites:  Exactly where you are in your powerboating skills and experience.

  • Your boat in your marina
  • Custom instruction based on your current skill-base and your goals.
  • Consider the value of spending a day focused on close quarters maneuvering & docking skills, or anchoring procedures, or emergency preparedness including crew overboard drills, or whatever your need is.
  • Taught by a professional educator with a lifetime of experience cruising the Salish Sea and the Inside Passage.
  • Certifications can be included for their base cost (and you can challenge them).
